The Opposition presents a motion of no confidence against Joseph Muscat’s Government
Dear Stringer
In the wake of the PanamaPapers scandal which has shocked the world, the Nationalist Party has presented a motion of no confidence against Joseph Muscat’s Government in the Maltese Parliament. Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil said he was presenting this Motion in the interest of restoring the country’s reputation. The motion will also give an opportunity to the incumbent Members of parliament to restore political stability by voting against corruption.
The Motion comes as Malta’s Prime Minister refused to ask for the resignations of Konrad Mizzi, Minister for Energy and Health, and Keith Schembri, his Chief of Staff after Mizzi and Schembri were embroiled in the Panama scandal. Moreover since the revelations of the existence of Minister Mizzi’s secret company in Panama Joseph Muscat has promoted him to Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. Konrad Mizzi revealed that he opened the secret company in Panama on the advice of the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Keith Schembri.
The PanamaPapers also revealed that Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi tried to open secret bank accounts in Dubai and Panama. These accounts could not be opened because Mizzi and Schembri were unable to provide adequate evidence that the accounts were not linked to corrupt practices.
Instead of sacking Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has continued to defend the two political figures, bringing doubts as to the possible involvement of the Prime Minister in these shady dealings.
The Motion of no confidence in Joseph Muscat’s government was presented earlier today by Simon Busuttil the Leader of the Opposition.
Whilst the Panama scandal is the biggest scandal in Maltese political history, the current government has since the beginning of its mandate in 2013, been dogged with a number of previous scandals involving alleged corruption.
Opposition leader Simon Busuttil expressed grave concern about Malta’s international reputation in the wake of this scandal, also considering Malta’s Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2017 and about the potential negative consequences, particularly on the local financial services sector. This Sunday, Simon Busuttil will be leading the second national protest against the corruption which has taken over the Labour Government.
