Facts belie Caruana Galizia’s crazed ranting
Updated: Sep 21
As I browsed through the Panama Papers I was very amused to realise that Daphne Caruana Galizia’s son was involved in this ‘ground breaking scoop’: that Konrad Mizzi has no money in the the trust or the company and therefore there is no evidence of any wrongdoings.
I wondered, are Matthew Caruana Galizia’s bosses aware that the mother of their very own beacon of justice and transparency is currently being investigated for tax avoidance herself?
MaltaToday has reported that Daphne owes the people of malta €101,000 in unpaid VAT.
Now I’m sure that both Daphne and Matthew Caruana Galizia will kick up as fuss and accuse this naughty authoritarian and dictatorial and undemocratic Government (which is also dictatorial enough to keep her nice but dim son Andrew on its payroll) of persecution. But you see, the problem is that the facts belie her crazed ranting.
Malta Today reported that in 2007 the VAT department informed Daphne, not once, but twice to file correct returns and even threatened her with criminal action.
As we all know, in 2007 the Government of the day was PN. In fact, one wonders, is the reason why no criminal action was taken despite the threat to do so? No wonder she is always frantic when election time approaches and she keeps on calling for snap elections (wishful thinking Daphne!).
She is forever
hopeful that her case keeps on magically being dragged on and on, with no penalty. We understand that
€101,000 is a lot of money – especially for someone who cannot rely on their husband’s love and goodwill to bail them out.
Dear readers, we have been reliably informed by local businesspeople that whenever angry creditors call Daphne, her husband has only one response: “leave me alone/ My
financial affairs are separate from those of my wife”. Ouch!
So much for better or for worse!
